Bowie is the State of Maryland's third-largest city, and the largest municipality in Prince George's County and owes its existence to the railway. In 1853, Colonel William Duckett Bowie obtained a charter from the Maryland legislature to construct a rail line into Southern Maryland. The area was dotted with small farms and large tobacco plantations in an economy based on agriculture and slavery. The city was initially named Huntington City. Eventually, Huntington City was renamed in honor of the son of William Duckett Bowie and his business partner, Oden Bowie who was President of the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad at the time, and previously Governor of Maryland. Bowie was re-chartered in 1880. Bowie has grown from the small railroad stop that was completed in 1873 into an ideal city with a healthy economy and a much sought-after quality of life. Located between Annapolis and the Nation's Capital, Bowie is a city of 18.5 square miles and approximately 55,000 residents. Bowie has nearly 2,000 acres set aside as parks and open space. Bowie has it's own Police Department, many special attractions for both young and old and easy access to Annapolis, Baltimore, Washington DC, and Virginia.
